Maximize your experience as a self-storage unit renter by packing and storing smart!
First, be sure to select the right unit for your needs. Visit our Storage Units page to determine how much square footage you might need based on the types of items you’re looking to store. If you will be adding to the storage unit over time, consider a larger size to accommodate expansion and make it simpler to move around inside the unit.
Here are some tips for making the most of your storage space:
Security
- Always use a high-quality lock on your storage unit. Ask our staff for recommendations.
- Keep an inventory of every item you’ve packed. Include an estimate of the replacement value of each item you store and take pictures of valuable items. These steps will help you make accurate insurance claims in case of unforeseen damage or loss.
Furniture & Bedding
- Use furniture drawers to protect wrapped delicate items.
- Store furniture carefully on boards or pallets.
- Cover mattresses and store them flat on level surfaces.
- Break down items (table legs) and store large furniture (tabletops, sofas) on end to save space.
- Use protective covers and treat wood surfaces before storing.
Boxes & Small Items
- Fill boxes with small items completely. Stuff gaps with newspaper to prevent collapsing when stacked.
- Label all boxes and construct aisles so business files are easily seen and accessible.
- Store loose, hard-to-pack items like pots and pans inside large appliances.
Equipment & Appliances
- When storing lawn and garden equipment, drain any fluids prior to storage. Use trash cans to store garden tools.
- Defrost refrigerators and freezers to avoid water damage and mildew growth. Tie down the appliance doors during transport, but leave them slightly ajar once in storage. Drain washing machines, and tie down hoses and cords before storing them.
- When storing a vacuum cleaner, clean out the bag or canister first.
